Seminar on independence of judiciary and media held

LAHORE: Lahore High Court former chief justice Mian Allah Nawaz has said that the country cannot move towards democracy and independence of judiciary without freedom of information.

Addressing a seminar titled ‘Restoration of Judiciary and Independence of Media and Role of Civil Society in Lawyers’ Movement” organised by Muhammad Ali Jinnah Lawyers’ Forum Pakistan here on Sunday at Lahore Press Club Auditorium, the former judge said that after the lapse of more than a half century, the nation was still devoid of the constitution and freedom of information act. He regretted the military regime cast black shadows over the political horizon of Pakistan. He said that media should never be deprived of the freedom of information as it was a major source to disclose the facts.

Forum Chairman Muhammad Islam Anjum, stalwart of the lawyers’ movement Hamid Khan, Lahore High Court Bar President Anwar Kamal, Justice (r) Khalil-ur-Rehman, Lahore Bar President Manzoor Qadir, former president Lahore High Court Bar Ahmad Owais Information secretary Information secretary Lahore High Court Bar Azher Saddique president of Khaksar Tehrik Hameed-ud-Din Mashraqi Rana Muhammad Arshad and Salman Mansoor were present on the occasion.

Addressing the seminar, Hameed Khan said that after the Muree Declaration, a count down had been started for the restoration of judiciary. He said that dictatorship derailed the political process. He criticised foreign pressure on political parties to work with President Musharraf. He said that after the restoration of judiciary, practical steps should be taken to put an end to unlawful ways of coming to power.
