Search for 7 absconders in Pearl case

KARACHI- Karachi police in watching for seven absconding accused allegedly involved in Daniel Pearl case. While two persons have been arrested in connection with the videocassette containing Pearl’s murder scene, police sources said.

Rumors were circulating in the police circles that preparations were being made to shift Shaikh Omar Saeed, the prime suspect of Pearl case, from Karachi to elsewhere. It was not officially confirmed, however a police source said that it could be possible for security point of view.

Official sources said that after receiving the videocassette containing Pearl’s murder scene, the police are working on different lines. Those include that Pearl was murdered prior to the date on which the videocassette was received, and he was not murdered in Karachi.

Meanwhile, an official handout said that Sindh Police is coordinating its efforts with Punjab police to ensure arrest of two accused, reportedly absconded in Punjab. Hectic efforts are afoot to locate three accused in Karachi.

According to the handout, the investigation branch of Karachi police continued with the interrogation of three accused including Shaikh Omar, presently in police custody. The investigation team continued efforts to apprehend the remaining, accused.

It is believed that search is being conducted for absconding accused Haider Farooqui and Hashim alias Arif, Qasim and others. Earlier, it was reported that Hashim alias Arif had been killed in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, US Consulate in Karachi will open a condolence book in memory of Daniel Pearl. Anyone who wishes to register his/her thoughts could do so during working days starting March 1, for three weeks.
