Scuffling lawyers demand ban on Geo, ARY
LAHORE: Chanting slogans and scuffling with each other, some of the lawyers demanded ban on two television channels at the Lahore High Court Bar Association here on Monday.
Lahore High Court Bar Association had convened a meeting on how the judiciary could be saved from all maligning attempts against it. When LHCBA President Shafqat Chohan was addressing the participants, some of the lawyers started chanting slogans, demanding ban on Geo and ARY television channels. Chohan and other members tried their best to control the rumpus, but to no avail. Finally, the meeting was adjourned and all the members left the hall amid the chaos.
Earlier, the bar adopted a resolution and urged all state institutions to remain in their constitutional domains and avoid extra-constitutional activities. It also passed another resolution, urging all television channels to avoid airing controversial and sensitive programmes which could hurt the sentiments of the citizens in the country.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Bar Council passed a resolution and announced the bar would struggle for the freedom of expression and independence of judiciary.
According to a press release issued on Monday, Pakistan Bar Council took serious notice of the recent distasteful attempts made by certain media groups to malign the judiciary, in general, and some particular judges, in particular.
It urged the government and to investigate such attacks on the judiciary and take the culprits to task.
