SCBA, PbBC, PBC to issue ‘licences’ to Geo Super, Aag

KARACHI: About 80 leaders and members of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Punjab Bar Council (PbBC), and the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) will issue ‘Awami licences’ to Geo Super, the only sports channel of the country, and Aag, the youth channel, at a ceremony here today (Tuesday).
Talking to The News, SCBA Secretary General Qamaruz Zaman said final touches were being given to arrangements for holding the ceremony to issue public licences to Geo Super and Aag channels. He said through these licences lawyers and workers would underline that the present attitude of the state organ Pemra was absolutely illegal and contrary to aspirations of the common man.
Rahat Munir adds from Rawalpindi: Lawyers protested against the closure of Geo Super and Aag, announcing the launch of a signing campaign for the issuance of licences to the sports and youth channels of Jang Group.
Condemning the closure of both TV channels by Pemra, AIM Pakistan Lawyers Forum said the banning of TV channels of the Jang Group under a democratic government would have negative impact on the freedom of the press.
A meeting of the Supreme Council of the AIM Pakistan Lawyers Forum was held to review the banning of Geo Super and Aag. The meeting was attended by its founder member Makhdoom Niaz Inqalabi, Advocate Sardar Abdul Majeed, Advocate Amna and several other lawyers.
Addressing the meeting, Makhdoom Niaz Inqalabi and other speakers said the PPP-led coalition government had targeted Jang Group indicating that the government was afraid of a free media. They said the government through Pemra had started a campaign against Jang Group, which had exposed its corruption.
