SLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday stayed the election result of the National Assembly constituency NA-118 Lahore-1, where a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate succeeded in the recent general elections held on February 18.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi, hearing an election candidateÕs appeal, directed the Election Commission to stop the election result of NA-118 Lahore-1 till March 3.

Other members of the bench included Justice Muhammad Qaim Jan Khan and Justice Muhammad Farrukh Mahmood.

PML-N candidate Malik Muhammad Riaz succeeded from this constituency in the recent general elections, bagging 55,900 votes while Syed Asif Akhtar Hashmi of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) remained the runner-up, bagging 24,712 votes.

Asif Akhtar Hashmi had challenged the educational degree of Malik Muhammad Riaz in the apex court. He had alleged that Malik Muhammad Riaz possessed a fake educational degree.

On Friday, Attorney General Malik Qayyum and the counsel for Syed Asif Akhtar Hashmi appeared before the court and submitted that the educational degree of Malik Muhammad Riaz was fake, which was also verified by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir University.

The court also directed Controller Examination, Azad Jammu and Kashmir University, to appear before the court on March 3 along with the educational record of Malik Muhammad Riaz, a PML-N candidate, and adjourned the hearing.
