The Pakistan Forest Institute Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently launched a report which mentions, among other things, a significant increase of 0.3 percent in forest cover across Pakistan and of 3.3 percent in KP. In a country where years of destruction of forests, at the hands of different mafias, and usage of forest wood as a domestic fuel by the poor, has made the landscape barren, I consider the above-mentioned report a very healthy sign.
The forest department in general and the KP government in particular should be commended on achieving this success. I also suggest that the government should ask all private and government TV channels to regularly air programmes highlighting the advantages of forests and the role they play in balancing the eco system and saving the country from floods and other natural disasters.
