Saleem Shahzad murder: Asma deplores ISPR warning to her

LAHORE: Regretting the tone of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement warning her on the issue of Saleem Shahzad murder case, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president Asma Jahangir has said she believes that she must truthfully and without any fear express the allegations, made by the press and her client about the investigation into the killing of the journalist.

In a statement here Saturday, she said warnings from the ISPR to desist from expressing the allegations interfere with her professional responsibilities, as the charges had legitimately been levelled in the court and investigated or defended in the court.
Perhaps, the ISPR is unaware that the reports about erasing of records from Saleem Shahzad s phone have appeared in the press and have not been denied by anyone, she added. These allegations were brought to the notice of the court.

Lawyers are not expected to investigate allegations and under no circumstances should they first get clearance from the ISPR before placing such allegations before the court, Asma Jahangir said.

She welcomed the approach of the ISPR in accepting an independent commission and hoped that they would avail the opportunity to join the investigation so that any unfounded allegations could be set right.
