The Rural Journalists Skills Development Programme

The Rural Journalists Skills Development Programme has played a significant role in meeting the need for trained journalists in rural areas. Rural journalists participating in training workshops receive basic training in news gathering, writing and transmission and introduced to important social and development issues as well as issues related to journalistic rights, responsibilities and ethics. Under this programme nearly 300 workshops have been organised in all parts of Pakistan, including such distant areas as Tharparkar, Dera Ismail Khan, Swat, Dir, Chitral and Skardu.

The programme, which was started in 1995, coincided with a dramatic growth in the number of publications, and parallel rise in the number of rural correspondents, most of whom had no experience of working for news organisations. The long-term objectives of this programme are to improve the quality of news coverage from the rural areas of Pakistan and to create a pool of trained journalists to enable publication of newspapers and magazines from rural areas.

Rural Journalists Skills Development Programme is widely recognised as an effective and innovative programme to raise the standards of rural journalism.
