Routes for Nato containers specified

ISLAMABAD: The government has specified routes for transportation of Isaf/Nato containers to provide security to these consignments from Karachi to Torkham and Chaman till entry into Afghanistan.

Sources told Business Recorder here on Friday that the first designated route for Isaf/Nato containers starts from Karachi to Kot Sabzal (Boundary of Sindh and Punjab). The security is being provided by Pakistan Rangers, Sindh and Sindh Police. The route would continue to Kot Sabzal to Attock Bridge (Boundry of Punjab and KPK). Within the territorial jurisdiction of Punjab, the security would be provided by Pak Rangers and Punjab Police.

The Nato/Isaf convoys would move from Attock Bridge to Hayatabad (Peshawar) and security would be provided by Frontier Constabulary and KPK Police. The remaining destined route of Isaf/Nato containers would continue from Hayatabad Peshawar to Torkham for crossing Pak-Afghan border. In this area, the security to the Nato/Isaf containers would be provided by Frontier Cops KPK Khasadar and Levies. The second destined route starts from Karachi to Balochistan with responsibility of security upto Sindh Boundary by Pak Rangers, Sindh and Sindh Police. The route for containers would continue from Sindh border to Chaman near Pak-Afghan border in Baloshistan. Here, security would be provided by FC and Balochistan Police.

Sources said that in wake of decision of the government to resume the Nato/Isaf supply, Senior Advisor on Interior had chaired a meeting to review security arrangements for the containers of Nato/Isaf supply to Afghanistan. FBR Chairman, IG Motorway, Additional Secretary Mol and IGP ICT attended the meeting. The Nato/Isaf convoys started from Karachi and Chaman and Ministry of Interior has directed the provincial administrations and police to ensure security of the Nato/Isaf convoy in their respective areas of responsibility.

The main responsibility of movement of Nato containers remains with FBR, therefore, the FBR Chairman would coordinate with respective law enforcement agencies and civil armed forces on movement of convoys through various provinces. The Director General Federal Investigation Agency has directed the respective directions to FIA at Karachi, Quetta (Chaman) and Torkham to coordinate with FBR for smooth movement of Nato/Isaf convoys form Karachi to Afghanistan through various routes.
