Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui ordered on Tuesday that the mobile phone SIMs activated after May 30 last year should be re-verified within 30 days through the biometric system.

He issued this directive while chairing a meeting with the Additional Inspector General, Deputy Inspector General (CID), Special Secretary Home, Director Inspector General (Admin), Karachi, SSP South, Director Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and representatives of the mobile phone companies at his office here.

The commissioner directed the law enforcement agencies and the mobile phone companies to strictly follow the orders.

He also warned that the outgoing calls of the defaulters, who would not authenticate their SIMs, would be blocked for 15 days in the initial stage.

After that period the SIMs would be blocked permanently, he said.

“These illegal and unauthorised SIMs are posing danger to the sovereignty of the state as these are being widely used in the activities against the people and the country,” the commissioner said.

“The government cannot afford any tolerance and negligence in this regard and the use of illegal and unauthorised SIMs should be eliminated on emergency basis,” Shoaib Siddiqui said.

The meeting also discussed the strategies to stop the illegal business and use of such SIMs.
