Radio channel plea against Pemra dismissed

LAHORE – Mr Justice Jamshed Ali of the Lahore High Court on Thursday dismissed a plea filed by a private radio channel against Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra).

The Pemra in September last took a measure against FM103 for its re-broadcasting foreign signals of a news channel which, under the Pemra laws, was not permissible.

The chief executive officer of the radio channel moved the LHC which, as an interim relief, restrained the authorities from taking any coercive measure against the petitioner.

In subsequent proceedings, the court was informed by the petitioner that it had dropped using the logo of the foreign news channel. The Pemra on the other hand maintained that dropping of logo did not make a difference when the broadcast (of the foreign news channel) was on.

It stated that the scope of the FM channel was widening and if the petitioner was allowed to air news from a foreign channel, the rest would also demand the same permission. The court then dismissed the petition.
