Punjab also bans govt ads to Nawa-i-Waqt

LAHORE —Feb, 26: Editor The Nation Arif Nizami has said that Hameed Nizami died on February 25,1962from suffocation caused by Ayub’s Martial Law. Unfortunately, the Nawa-i-Waqt publications was facing a similar situation even today and so was the case with The Nation. Rather worse.’There is no democracy in the country,” he asserted.

In his opening speech on Hameed Nizami Day function at Hameed Nizami Hall, Arif Nizami said Wednesday it was ironical that on the occasion of Hameed Nizami’s death anniversary, the provincial government too had banned advertisements to the Nawa-i-Waqt publications after the federal government did so.

He regretted that the rulers had not learnt any lesson from the history nor had they read the history. “This tactic was used by Ayub Khan and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and even the political governments in the past. Bhutto wanted to deprive Nawa-i-Waqt of ads. Now, Gen Musharraf is treading the same path. What is the reason? We are paying the price for continuing our policy and mission”, which implied that a worst form of democracy is better than any form of Martial Law.

Army’s job is to look after the geographical boundaries. He said there should be no NAB brand democracy. There should be supremacy of Parliament and no bargain on fundamental national interests.

“It is, however, an irony that they are annoyed when we point out what is Happening today”, Arif Nizanii said and asserted that Nawa-i-Waqt would not change its policy:There will beno compromise on nuclear pogramme, democracy ,Kashmir etc. This mission will continue under the leadership of Majid Nizami, he added.
