PUJ demands judicial commission in Afridi’s case

LAHORE: Supporting the stance taken by the Khyber Union of journalists on Rehmat Shah Afridi’s arrest in a narcotics case, the Punjab Union of journalists adopted a resolution on Monday condemning the arrest.

With Rooman Ehsan, its president, in the chair, the meeting termed the arrest as part of government efforts to strangulate the voice of dissent.

While recognising the role of “Frontier Post” in upholding the positive democratic trends in the country the journalists body unanimously decided to take affirmative action to defend freedom of the press in the country as it had earlier done in the case of Jang group.

The PUJ asked the government and concerned investigating officials to strictly adhere to the norms dictated by law and also respect the rights of the accused while proceeding with the investigation.

It demanded formulation of a judicial commission in the matter.

Meanwhile, a fact-finding committee by the PUJ was constituted to look deep into the matter of the arrest of Rehmat Shah Afridi, editor of “The Frontier Post”.

Another meeting of the PUJ and Lahore Press Club to discuss further line of action on the issue is to be held in Lahore Press Club on Friday.
