Public, private varsities to launch central website

Karachi: Public and private universities have decided to launch a central website to provide information and guidance to students about all universities and degree-awarding institutes. The decision was taken at the Governor House in a meeting chaired by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, who is also the chancellor of all state-run universities in the province.

In the meeting that was attended by vice chancellors of public and private varsities, it was decided that information about university rankings, available facilities and other required details could be provided to the students through the website.

The governor said public and private varsities should benefit from each other’s experiences. He stressed the importance of initiating joint efforts in the higher education sector to achieve concrete results.

He said one of the major challenges Pakistan currently faced was the anti-state elements propagating negative perceptions about the country.

Pakistan has achieved milestones in different sectors and their impact is being undermined through negative propaganda about the country, he added. He stressed on the vice chancellors to play their respective role for promoting a positive image of Pakistan.

Talking about milestones in the education sector, the governor said besides an improvement in the research and teaching sectors, enrolment in universities had doubled and several varsities had received ISO certification.

He said the University of Karachi had also assumed its place among the 500 major varsities across the world. Developed countries, including those in Europe, have been showing an interest in investing in Pakistan in different sectors, including education and health, he added.

He apprised the participants of the meeting about the security situation of Karachi and the efforts being made to improve it. Later, special shields on behalf of the Federal Education Ministry were distributed among the vice chancellors to appreciate their services in the field of higher education
