PTA to issue licences for cable TV networks

ISLAMABAD- Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) will invite expression of interest for issuance of licences for setting up cable television networks in the country a PTA spokesman said.

The authority will evaluate the expression of interest and after the process is completed the PTA will ask the interested parties to submit a fee, for issuance of licences.

The fee, as per the decision of the federal cabinet, will be charged on the basis of household served by a particular cable operator, he said. “We have made different categories on the basis of number of houses connected to the cable,” he added. For instance if a cable operator is serving 1000 household, he would he placed in category A and will be charged fee according to the number of houses connected to it,” he added.

All the channels offered by the cable operators will be monitored minutely. It will be a regular feature and for that the PTA is framing rules and regulations, he added.

The decision of the federal cabinet to open the local market for cable operators have generated a lot of interest and the PTA is expected to receive a good response, particularly from cities like Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi. Some cable operators had,” already been operating in some parts of Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.
