P@sha ICT Awards 2006: a lot needs to be done in IT sector: PSEB

RECORDER REPORT

KARACHI (September 16 2006): The country’s IT sector has been performing quite well, but still there is a lot to be done in terms of infrastructure and Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) has already identified potential solutions to a number of issues.
These words were expressed by Yusuf Hussain, Managing Director PSEB while speaking on the occasion of P@sha ICT Awards organised here by the Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@sha) on Thursday evening. “These awards have provided a milestone to an industry that stands on quality and virtual excellence, a standard and goal to work towards and recognise these mammoth efforts by lending out support to the initiative,” he said.

It was the spirit of competition that enabled a group of people within a community and society to stand up, take notice and applaud the very best around them, Yusuf remarked. Jehan Ara, president P@sha said this was the third consecutive year that these awards were being organised to celebrate the success that the country was having in the IT sector. “Pakistan’s ICT sector is known regionally as well as internationally and our success stories are talked about in the media world-wide. We are having a lot of success and celebrating our success gives everyone a feeling of elation and adds an impetus into the industry that is already innovating and growing at a rate of 50 percent every year,” Jehan Ara observed.

“Last year the winner of our media and entertainment category, Media Innovations Pvt Ltd went on to win the Asia Pacific ICT Awards in Thailand matched against such stalwarts as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Thailand,” she referred. To a question, the P@sha chief said that we had been slow to project the success and innovation that existed in the industry not only internationally but also domestically. That was the reason, P@sha decided to launch the first ICT awards in 2004 to recognise the top achievers and to celebrate the industry as a whole, she observed. The objective of the P@sha ICT awards is to provide recognition to software and service applications that have been developed in Pakistan and meant to acknowledge creativity, innovation and excellence in the Pakistan Information and Communication Technologies sector.

Digital Prodigy Pvt Ltd won the healthcare applications award for its product Telemedicine Consultation software and Prislogix for Hospital Management system. TPS Pakistan won financial applications award for its product Phoenix and THK Solutions for its product Simex. Netsol Technologies for Electronic Credit Information Bureau and Catco International for National Education Database project were awarded under e-governance applications category. There were awards under many other categories including communications applications, general applications, security applications, education and training applications, media and entertainment applications, tertiary student project, ICT for special needs, brand development and best IT/ITES employer.
