Probe ordered into death of woman after childbirth

TAXILA: Authorities have taken serious notice of the death of a 19-year-old woman who died due to alleged negligence of the doctors after giving birth to a baby at Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital, Hassanabdal, on March 31.

Talking to media persons here on Sunday, Executive District Officer (Health) Dr Mohammad Hussain Naqvi said the health authorities had ordered a probe into the case by a team headed by Deputy District Officer (DDO) Health Dr Mumtaz Ahmed Khan.

Mr Naqvi said the team would record the statements of the doctors and other staff, including the hospital’s medical superintendent, besides the relatives of the deceased.

Asma Bibi, a resident of Jallo village, died after giving birth to a baby boy through surgery. She died in the Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF) hospital Wah Cantt, where she was taken by her relatives after “poor treatment” at the THQ hospital.

It may be recalled here that Asma’s relatives accused the THQ hospital’s doctors, especially the surgeon, of professional negligence.

They said when Asma’s case became complicated, the gynecologist Dr Kaneez Fatima, decided to go for a caesarean.

They alleged that despite repeated requests, Surgeon Dr Liaquat did not come to help the lady doctor.

When the patient’s condition turned critical, instead of stabilising her, the surgeon asked the relatives to shift Asma to the POF hospital.
