Protesters attack media workers in two cities of Pakistan
On March 27, 2016, Karachi Press Club (KPC) was attacked by activists of the student wing of a political party. They manhandled two media workers, damaged their equipment and set fire the reporting vanof Jaag television channel. Abdul Rehman, reporter of Jaag television and Sohail Burfat cameraman of the same television channel were assaulted by the protestors.
Dozens of activists of Anjuman Talba-i-Islam (ATI), the student wing of Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan-Nooranihad gathered outside the KPC to protest the execution of police guard Mumtaz Qadri who been convicted for murder of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer.
The protesters shattered the windowpanes of a parked van ofJaagtelevision channel, took away the equipment from it and then set it on fire. Theyargued with cameramen that media did not properly cover their protest. They also tried to enter KPC but failed and they threw petrol bombs they were carrying and pelted the building with stones.
Talking to Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) Fazil Jamali, President of KPC said fortunately there were no serious injuries. A criminal complaint was registered with the police against Iftekhar Ahmed chiefof ATI’s Karachi.
In a separate incidentin Islamabad,the capital of Pakistan, protesters of the Sunni Tehreek, a religious-political party, assaulted Khurram Amin, a photographer for daily “Dawn” and injured Nawaz Ahmed, a cameraman of “Samaa” television channeland broke his camera outside Parliament House. Talking to PPF Farhan Malik, director news of Samaa said, luckily the reporter received minor injuries.
Pakistan Federation of Union of Journalists (PFUJ) condemned the attacks on Karachi Press Club and media workers in Islamabad.
