Press enjoys real freedom, says Musharraf

ISLAMABAD – President Pervez Musharraf said on November 11, that the press was enjoying real freedom and there was no pressure whatsoever from the government on the press.

“Real freedom has been granted to the press in Pakistan. There is no pressure on it from the government,” he told the additional secretary in charge of the Information Ministry, Shahid Rafi. The president congratulated Mr. Rafi on taking over his new responsibilities and hoped that he would fulfil his obligations in a befitting manner.

President Musharraf said the electronic and print media had never before given such freedom before. The press was free and was even targeting him, he said, adding that but he never interfered. However, the press should realise its responsibilities in matters of national interest, which was vital above all, he added.

Talking about efforts to develop the media, he said the government was utilising all resources in this respect. New channels were coming, which had not only created an atmosphere of competitiveness among them, but also put the country on the way to gradually becoming a media market, he said.
