President appoints chairman of press council

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari appointed on Tuesday a former judge of the Lahore High Court (LHC), Raja Mohammad Shafqat Khan Abbasi, as the chairman of the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP).

The appointment was made on the advice of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani under section 6 of the Press Council of Pakistan Ordinance, said President`s spokesman Farhatullah Babar.

The PCP came into being through an ordinance in 2002 as an autonomous and independent body to implement a code of conduct for the press as contained in the schedule of the ordinance.

The council is based in Islamabad with sub-offices in each provincial capital and its expenses are met by grant-in-aid provided by the government. It consists of 19 members and its chairman is appointed by the president from amongst the retired judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan or a person qualified to be a judge of the Supreme Court.
