Pregnant woman, infant locked up with male inmates

By Faraz Khan

KARACHI: Police have arrested a pregnant woman and are keeping her in custody with her one-year-old son at a local police station for the last three days.

Irshad Khatoon was charged with assisting her family in kidnapping another woman.

However, Khatoon’s family has alleged that the police have arrested her in a fake case.

Khatoon, her father Jamil and her brother Naeem were nominated in an FIR on the complaint of Qari Fazlur Rehman who teaches at Madrassa Rehmania situated in Shah Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Colony.

Following the registration of the FIR – which stated that Naeem had kidnapped Rehman’s daughter Ruqayya with his family’s assistance – the Taimuria police’s investigation wing raided the Surjani area and arrested Jamil, Khatoon and her infant.

On the other hand, the family of the accused said Rehman had married Khatoon’s sister Uzma, 21, two months ago with the promise that he would marry off Ruqayya to Uzma and Khatoon’s brother Naeem according to the ‘watta satta’ custom.

However, Rehman had broken his promise and was trying to marry off his daughter to his nephew.

Following this, Ruqayya eloped with Naeem and they got married.

Uzma said, “Despite the passage of three days, the police have neither shifted my sister to the Women’s police station nor have they produced her in the court. She is seven-months pregnant and she can’t feed her baby in the presence of the policemen.”

However, a case investigation officer Arif said the police shifted Khatoon to the Women’s police station in the night hours.
