PPP condemns harassment of TV reporter

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on Thursday expressed concern over the harassment of DawnNews reporter Babar Hussain and demanded arrest of those involved in it.

Hussain was reportedly picked up and interrogated by an intelligence agency early this week following his report on the recent suicide attack on SSG commandos in Tarbela.

“The PPP condemns the inhuman treatment meted out to Babar Hussain by the intelligence agency men who kidnapped and intimidated him in broad daylight outside his house in Rawalpindi,” said Sherry Rehman, the party’s information secretary, in a statement.

She said this incident sent a message to journalists to “exercise restraint” and her party would raise it at all relevant platforms.

Rehman said that 2007 was the year in which massive measures were taken against journalists in the wake of the judicial and political crises.

She said the intimidation of journalists was a matter of concern and demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for harassing Hussain. “The constitution provides no room for immunity to the intelligence agency officials. They cannot be allowed to run a parallel government,” she said. Rehman added that her party was committed to protection of journalists and had actively campaigned for their rights both inside and outside the parliament.
