PPF is concerned over the shooting and injuring newspaper journalist in Brazil
Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to Michel Temer, President of Brazil expressed concern over the shooting at journalist Edvaldo Oliveira of newspaper Voz das Cidades in Brazil.
PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter urged the Brazilian government to guarantee safety of Oliveira and ensure that his attackers are brought to justice.
According to Committee to Protect Journalists, on October 3, Oliveira was shot at about 7:30 pm when he was distributing newspapers in Franco da Rocha. The eyewitness of the incident said that two men on a motorcycle stopped alongside of Oliveira and asked him for the newspaper. Meantime one of the men shot him in his shoulder. Fortunately, second bullet did not discharged from the gun therefore, they fled.
Oliveira’s colleague who distributes newspapers with him said they had been followed by unidentified men as they work. He continued, “We started handing out papers at around 1:00 in the afternoon, and we started to feel threatened,” he told the news program. “Throughout the afternoon people were filming us.”
News reports quoted the statement of Oliviera’s family that he had been threatened because of his reporting and criticism on municipal issues and local authorities in Franco da Rocha and neighboring Caieiras, two of the 39 municipalities that make up the Sao Paulo metropolitan area.
Oliveira’s newspaper usually contains stories of local interest like paving streets, filling in potholes, and boosting funding for health clinics.
