Politicians slam threats to Asma

LAHORE: Politicians from mainstream parties have condemned death threats to leading rights activist and former Human Rights Commission of Pakistan chairperson Asma Jahangir and the Punjab government has said it will provide security to her.

“We condemn threats to Ms Jahangir’s life. Investigation should be launched to expose those behind the threats so that they can be brought to book,” says PML-N Senator Pervaiz Rashid. He said the Punjab government would provide security to Ms Jahangir.

Jamaat-i-Islami chief Syed Munawar Hasan condemned the threats and asked the security agencies to improve their image by bridging the gap between them and the masses. He asked the government to immediately provide her adequate security.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf information secretary Shafqat Mahmood condemned threats to Asma. He said the government should take the matter seriously and investigate it to reach those threatening her. Besides, he said the government should provide her security.

PPP South Punjab senior vice-president Haider Zaman Qureshi said his party condemned the threats. “Besides an eminent lawyer and rights activist, she is one of the few saner liberal voices left in the country, exposing establishment’s agenda and conspiracies.

She is respected worldwide because of her impartiality, intellect and boldness,” he said.
