Police pick up Journalist

LAHORE, September 15 2005: Staff reporter of a local newspaper Imran Zahid was arrested from his house by Township police officers on allegations that he opened fire at Adnan Butt on Wednesday September 14.

Imran and his brother Luqman were picked up from their house in Walton. Imran’s colleagues alleged that the reporter had been falsely accused.

Butt, the brother-in-law of SSP’s reader Yahya Butt, had registered the complaint against Imran. Imran’s mother said that the police officials, Adnan Butt and three accomplices forced their way into the house of Imran’s aunt. “They terrorised the women”, Imran’s mother said.

They tortured the women and took away Rs 10,000, she alleged. “There was complete darkness due to a power failure. “There is too much police hooliganism. If the SSP’s own staff will get involved in such acts, what will happen in the city,” she asked. Journalists have expressed concern over high-handedness by the police.
