Police officer thrashes reporter

PESHAWAR, May 02 2006: Superintendent of Police Ayub on Monday beat up a reporter covering the incident of the killing a tribesman by Levies personnel in a settled area which comes under the jurisdiction of Mathani Police Station, the reporter said. According to media report Wahidur Rehman Khalil, correspondent of the AVT Khyber television channel, alleged that the SP beat him up when he sought his comments on the killing of the tribesman. “He slapped and kicked me,” Wahid alleged.

“Wahid is immature. We had nothing to do with the case and were about to leave after receiving an emergency call. Wahid started threatening me and I told him to do whatever he could,” SP Ayub told media. Peshawar Press Club President Syed Bukhar Shah, Khyber Union of Journalists President Intikhab Amir and Photographers Association President Shehzad Ahmad condemned the incident and said they would take up the issue with senior police authorities.
