Police grill suspect’s family to find Pearl

KARACHI- Investigators said they were putting pressure on the family of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in the hope that this would lead them to Daniel Pearl. At the same time they were continuing to interrogate suspects and raid houses in their search for the Wall Street Journal reporter. Sheikh Omar’s father, Saeed Sheikh, a clothes merchant from Wanstead in east London, has also flown out from Britain “out of concern” for the family, police sources told the news sources. After visiting the family in Lahore he had now travelled to Karachi, police said. “If there is going to be any negotiation, it will be with his family,” said a senior investigative source. “The family can only tell him ‘you stupid fool, now it is over’.” Other angles were also being followed, investigators said.

The Pakistani wife of a journalist slain in Afghanistan added her voice on Saturday to calls for the release of Daniel Pearl. Sadia Seher, whose Afghan husband, Reuters photojournalist Aziz Haidari, was killed in an ambush on a road to Kabul last November, appealed to Pearl’s captors “to feel the pain” of his family.

“If you are Muslims, for God’s sake, please let him go. If you believe in one God, don’t hurt him and leave him for his wife and innocent as yet unborn child,” Sadia said in an open message. “To the kidnappers, I say I am your Pakistani Muslim sister. I am a widow, please feel my pain and release Daniel Pearl,” she wrote.
