Police brutality: Journalists rally to support colleagues
MUZAFFARABAD: Journalists of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Monday staged a protest against the use of force by the government to bar media coverage of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pakistan Awani Tehreek protests in Islamabad.
The protest was jointly organised by Central Press Club (CPC) and the journalists’ union.
Protesters were holding black flags and placards inscribed with slogans. On the occasion, CPC President Sohail Mughal said we are to express solidarity with journalists and cameramen who were assaulted by policemen while covering the ongoing protests in Islamabad’s Red Zone.
Journalist Tariq Naqash condemned media houses for not providing proper guidelines to journalists who were deputed to cover the mob. He asked media owners to properly train their reporters and cameramen to cover mob-like situation.
Journalist Roshan Mughal, while addressing the protesting journalists, condemned the use of brute force, saying the journalist community of AJK is shocked over the attack on Pakistan Television by protesters.
CPC Secretary General Tahir Farooqi urged the journalist community to show unity among their ranks and send a message to the government that journalists will never compromise to write and speak the truth. He demanded the federal government to register a First Investigation Report against the police who thrashed media persons and paved the way for protesters to ransack the PTV building in Islamabad.
