PML-N vows to protect right of freedom of expression

LAHORE: Leader of Pakistan Muslim League-N and spokesman of Punjab government, Senator Pervaiz Rashid has strongly condemned the threats given to a TV anchor.

In a statement, he said that after long dictatorship of General Musharraf, the country was put on the road to democracy and it was expected that besides political elements other segments and institutions would also play their role for the promotion of democratic values.

He said that criticism and difference of opinion are the basic elements of democracy.

He said that without free media, the concept of democratic society cannot be thought.

He said that criticism is the source of reformation and bringing positive change in the society, and added that through criticism soft image of any society is brought before the world but for the last many years good picture of Pakistan was not presented before the world.

He said that murder of Saleem Shahzad and Wali Khan and torture on Umar Cheema are its worst examples.

He said that the threats being given to Hamid Mir are a matter of concern for the journalist community and the democratic loving quarters throughout the country.

Pervaiz said that Hamid Mir has also provided those mobile phone numbers from where he received threatening messages through which it is not a difficult task to trace the culprits.

He said that it is the responsibility of the government to carry out necessary investigation in this matter.

He assured Hamid Mir, on behalf of PML-N that it would support and protect the right of freedom of expression and safeguard his life.
