PML-N, MQM, JI slam acts against Jang Group, Geo

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have strongly condemned the burning of copies of The News and the daily Jang, and blocking of Geo TV transmission.

PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif said in a statement that the plot aimed at bringing the media under pressure was meant to weaken democracy. He strongly condemned blocking of Geo TV’s transmission and torching of the copies of The News and the daily Jang. He said some people were criticising the media for telecasting the truth and showing reality. He said this act might prove fatal for democratic norms in the country.

“We want a free media like the independent judiciary. The media has played a vital role in the revival of democracy in the country. If restrictions are imposed on the media, we will strongly oppose them,” Nawaz Sharif added.

Separately, Punjab government spokesman Senator Pervez Rasheed said the use of illegal means against the media was condemnable. “The people who claim to flag bearers of democracy are negating themselves by restricting the media,” he added.Meanwhile, MQM chief Altaf Hussain demanded of the federal and provincial governments to take note of the actions against Geo and the Jang Group. In a statement, he said those involved in attacks on offices of cable operators and burning of copies of The News and the daily Jang should be arrested. He said such actions were in fact attack on the freedom of the media.

Separately, JI leader Liaquat Baloch condemned the burning of bundles of The News and the daily Jang. He said in a statement that the JI paid tributes to the Geo and Jang Group administration for discharging journalistic duties fearlessly. He said protests would be held in favour of the Jang Group across the country today (Monday).
