PFUJ wants case against Hamid Mir closed

KARACHI: Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) (Dastoor) has rejected all governmental proceedings and plans regarding the infringement of media freedom in the country, and expressed its anger at the designs of the government to chain basic media freedom.

The media body also called for an end to the case filed against senior journalist Hamid Mir, and in a joint statement Idrees Bakhtiar and Mian Riffat Qadri stated that for the sake of media freedom, not only have journalists sacrificed their lives and comforts, but have also suffered hardships such as imprisonment.

They said the PFUJ firmly and decisively rejects all measures proposed which are aimed at suppression of electronic and print media in the country. They also warned the government to refrain from any such misadventures that may refresh memories of dictatorial regimes.

They also condemned the case registration and arrest warrant issued against Hamid Mir in Balochistan for raising his voice for the missing persons, and said that such tactics had not succeeded in frightening journalists in the past nor would they succeed in doing so in the future. The PFUJ also unanimously called for the closing of the case and the repeal of warrant against Hamid Mir.
