ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) Pervaiz Shaukat on Wednesday served Rs1 billion defamation notice to the Secretary Information for providing false and malicious information to the Supreme Court regarding inclusion of his name among the beneficiaries of the secret fund.

Pervaiz Shaukat, through Malik Ghulam Mustafa Kandwal, wrote in the legal notice that he is the President of PFUJ and was appointed as member of Judicial Commission probing the death of Journalist Saleem Shahzad. The notice says that the commission met in Lahore because Justice Saqib Nisar was posted in the Supreme Court Lahore Registry and that Mr Shaukat had to travel to Lahore to attend those meetings.

The notice sought from the Information Ministry to clarify the position within two days in the print and electronic media so that Mr Shaukat could be vindicated from the baseless and mala fide assertions of Information Ministry.

Pervaiz Shaukat, while talking to The News said that his name was placed at number one in the list of beneficiaries of secret fund which was painful for himself, his family and his friends and the journalist community. “I have been travelling at my own expense throughout Pakistan to fight cases for journalists and had he been told that the expenses of Saleem Shahzad commission were also to be borne by him, he would have done the same,” Shaukat added.
