PESHAWAR: Police accused of backing ‘rapist’

By Our Correspondent

PESHAWAR, Sept 12: The father of a girl, allegedly raped in remote Buner district, has accused a police official of siding with the ‘rapist’. Bakhti Rawan, of Jabai Panjtar of Buner district, told newsmen at in the Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday that some month’s back, his disabled daughter had gone to fetch water from a nearby well, where Namroz Gul, son of Guldad, caught her. He alleged that when his wife heard the screams of the girl, she rushed to the flace and saw the man committing rape.

He said his wife, unable to overpower the man, started shouting in order to seek people’s help. Namroz Gul managed to flee after committing the crime, he alleged. “When my wife approached the Totalai police station to register a case, SHO Bakhti Raj refused to lodge an FIR against the criminal,” he said. “At this, my wife telephoned me. “I got back to the village and contacted the SHO, asking him to lodge an FIR,” he added. The SHO, he said, misbehaved with him and challenged him to do whatever he could. “Soon I contacted the DPO Buner, who directed the SHO to register the case,” he said. However, the police officer had not yet acted upon the directives of his superior, he added.

He said he approached the DPO again, who directed the SHO for the second time to register the case, and conduct the victim’s medical test. The SHO did conduct the medical test, but avoided to nominate the alleged criminal in the FIR, said Bakhti Rawan. He also refused to hand over photocopies of medical report and FIR, he added. “The ‘rapist’ is roaming freely in the area and constantly threatening me of dire consequences in case I continue to press police for taking action against him,” he said.
