PEMRA vows action against operators violating its laws

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) vowed on Wednesday to take stern action against all broadcasting and distribution operators involved in violating PEMRA laws and code of conduct.

This decision was taken in the regional general manager’s (RGM) meeting held at PEMRA’s headquarters in Islamabad.

According to a press release, important decisions were taken in the meeting including the blacklisting of unregistered foreign channels, which are being aired illegally by cable operators.

Issues like growing menace of piracy, non-adherence to intellectual property laws and flooding of illegal decoder cards in the markets were also discussed.

PEMRA executive member Dr Abdul Jabbar directed all RGMs not to tolerate any violation of PEMRA laws and asked all RGMs to ensure that the media and distribution networks work within the limits prescribed by PEMRA.

The meeting also took serious notice of the airing of illegal health advertisements of quacks and the broadcasting of excessive advertisements beyond the PEMRA limits and vowed to protect viewer rights.
