Pemra, PBC, private FMs to play role in flood-hit areas

ISLAMABAD: A meeting between chairman Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra), director general Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation and representatives / owners of private FM Radios of Sindh was held at Pemra Regional Office Karachi on Tuesday, to chalk out combined strategy to help rain and flood affectees by highlighting their plight and disseminating the same to relief agencies and NDMA, say a press release.

Similarly, the alliance would help disseminating preventive and health related information to the affectees with the help of World Health Organization (WHO) and local health agencies. Chairman Pemra, Dr Abdul Jabbar, said that the role of private FM radio in creating awareness about the intensity of disaster and providing timely information to relevant agencies in initiating relief, rehabilitation and medical cure can not be ignored. In the wake of havoc wreaked by torrential rains and floods in most parts of Sindh province, it was realized that vigorous efforts should be made through broadcast media to disseminate information among the public vis-‡-vis losses incurred through this calamity in the affected areas and highlight plight of displaced people, said chairman Pemra.

It was decided that free radio transistors would be provided to the rain affectees enabling them access to information relating to relief and rehabilitation and local FM operators would maintain close coordination with respective District Coordination Officers (DCOs) to arrange various charity programmes to collect donations.

DG, PBC Mr Solangi assured maximum support in sharing information between PBC and Pemra licensed private FM radios. He said that Pakistan Radio would provide FTP and Satellite links to private radio broadcasters to run simultaneous awareness campaigns through their FM stations. It was decided that special programmes would be originated in Sindhi, Urdu, Seraiki and other local languages to inform inhabitants about relief work performed by various NGO’s and organizations.

Representatives / owners of private FM radios FM 105, FM 100, FM 95, FM 91, FM 98, FM 100.6 and FM 100.2 from Karachi, Hyderabad, Benazirabad (Nawabshah), Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Umar Kot and Tando Adam participated in the meeting. They lauded initiative of Pemra and PBC and assured their maximum support in this philanthropic cause.
