PEMRA disposes of 540 complaints against TV channels, cable operators

ISLAMABAD: Five PEMRA councils, assigned to address reverences against TV channels and cable operators, have disposed of 540 complaints during past four months.

One council each has been set up in all the provinces, federal capital are working under Pakistan Electronic and Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), said official sources. Strict action has been taken against cable operators on playing movies and stage dramas on compact discs in violation of PEMRA rules whether complaints in this regard were received or not.

There were about 2500 cable operators across the country and PEMRA keeps monitoring their services and imposes fine in accordance with violation committed by them.

PEMRA takes swift action against any complaint received with any particular reference or pin-pointing of the violation, adding “our action is complaint-driven”.

To a question he said, a clear policy has already been conveyed to TV channels while awarding licences to them regarding timing of news bulletin, current affair programmes and advertisements.

PEMRA neither issued landing rights to any foreign based Pakistani News Channel nor was such application pending with the authority. If any such channel would apply for landing rights permission, it would have to obey all PEMRA rules.
