Pemra awards FM radio licences for AJK and Northern Areas

ISLAMABAD, March 09, 2006: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Wednesday March 8 extended eight FM radio broadcast stations, six for AJK and two for Northern Areas.

The bidding ceremony for award of licences was held in a fair and transparent manner, at Pemra Council Office here, said a press release.

Shahid Humayun, Executive Member Pemra told the participants about the initiation phase of FM radio licences for AJK and NAs, whereby 19 companies have submitted their expression of interests (EoIs), out of which only nine (09) were pre-qualified after procedural scrutiny.

The bidding was held to award the FM radio licences for Mirpur, Kotli, Muzaffarabad, Bhimber, Dir Kot, Rawalakot, Skardu and Gilgit areas.

The successful companies would require starting operation within one year after the award of licences.

Shahid Humayun called for earliest implementation of project and urged the successful bidders to ensure healthy flow of information, entertainment, and education to the public but in due adherence and conformity to national interest.

He said Pemra had made enormous contribution in changing the landscape of private electronic media in Pakistan in a short span of four years.

It had already awarded 98 FM radio licences across the country, out of which 48 started operations, he added.
