Pemra asks landing rights holders to renew licences

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Friday asked all the landing rights permission holders to apply for renewal of their permission strictly in accordance with the Pemra laws and rules.

A handout by the authority says, “Pemra issues landing rights permissions to off-shore satellite TV channels for a period of five years and as a resultant all permission holders are obliged to apply afresh for renewal of their permission at least six months before expiry of the same under rule 12(1) of Pemra Rules.

Subsequently, the authority processes the renewal application as per eligibility criteria and subject to fulfilment of legal requirements as well as payment of relevant fees etc. Authority renews the licence for a similar term”.

It also pointed out that some landing rights permission holders including Geo Super (28.2.2011), AXN (16.5.2011), Discovery (24.5.2011), Animal Planet (24.5.2011) and Ujala TV (19.8.2011) had not applied for renewal of their permissions despite the fact that their permissions were expiring on the dates mentioned here.

Meanwhile, during routine enforcement activities, Pemra seized three illegal FM Radios in Swabi. Nine cable TV networks were seized in Lahore, Peshawar, Hazro and Hassanabdal. A few of these cable TV networks had defaulted in paying annual renewal fees and others were indulged in illegal operations and were relaying satellite channels illegally.
