Pemra asks hotels to sever Indian DTH services
ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) on Friday asked five stars hotels in Islamabad to shut Indian DTH services with immediate effect.
A PEMRA monitoring team visited three major hotels of Islamabad including Serena Hotel, Marriott hotel and Islamabad Hotel and asked their managements to stop making available Indian DTH services in hotels.
The PEMRA team also conveyed to the hotels that they should follow the instructions or face the music.
PEMRA teams have also visited different guest houses, hotels and restaurants in the federal capital and its suburbs warning them against offering Indian DTH services.
The PEMRA launched the first phase of a crackdown on illegal Indian DTH on October 15 and it teams carried raids across the country and found more than hundred of cable operators offering Indian DTH services illegally.
Earlier, the PEMRA had allowed TV channels and cable operators to give space to foreign content not more than 10 per cent of their transmission that included six per cent of Indian content.
But later, it put a complete ban on Indian channels.
On the other hand, the 66th meeting of the PEMRA Council of Complaint was held under the Chair of Dr Mehdi Hassan on Friday and it imposed Rs2.
5 million fine on a private TV channel for airing a content questioning prime minister’s patriotism.
The same TV channel had also aired a ‘baseless’ story against Member National Assembly Waseem Akhtar and it could not provide evidence in its defence during the PEMRA hearing.
The council also imposed Rs0.
5 million on another TV channel for airing false news against Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashood.
The private TV channel failed to provide evidence to substantiate its claim.
The council postponed the hearing in the Chaudhry Anwar Aziz case till next meeting due to the absence of the complainant.
