Pemra accused of harassing cable operators

HYDERABAD: The Indus Cable Operators Association has accused Pemra of harassing and victimising for ‘ulterior motives’.

General secretary of the association Qurban Ali Memon said at a news conference here on Sunday that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority had deprived TV viewers in interior Sindh of entertainment facilities by ordering closure of many channels. The action, he said, was reminiscent of the steps taken Gen Zia and Gen Musharraf.

He said show-cause notices were being issued to cable operators on old issues along with threats of cancellation of their licenses.

He appealed to the federal minister for information and broadcasting and the other authorities concerned to take notice of what he called Pemra’s highhandedness and protect people’s right to freedom of expression and entertainment.

He warned that if the harassment was not stopped, cable operators would shut their network and hold protest demonstrations and observe hunger strike.
