Pearl’s release within days

LAHORE- Pakistani and US agencies working on US reporter Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping are hopeful about his release within a couple of days, according to a well-placed source in a Pakistani intelligence.

The source said authorities were negotiating with the kidnappers. The negotiations were centered on the kidnappers main demand for securing release of some people in exchange for Pearl and there was a possibility of a deal being struck with certain conditions and compromises, the source said. Daniel Pearl was alive and well, the source added, refusing to divulge any further details.

“The situation is changing every minute and the deal may take place even within a hour,” the source said, adding that areas in southern Punjab were the main focus for police and the intelligence agencies at this crucial stage of developments.

Confirming that search of Afghan-concentrated areas, especially in the City, were also a part of the nationwide search for the kidnapped US journalist Daniel Pearl, the official said that these areas had already become the main focus of the foreign intelligence agencies since September 11 attacks in the US. The police officers working on the case could not be contacted as their cell-phones were not responding. Official sources also did not confirm the details.
