Pearl is alive, CPLC Chairman

The Chairman of Citizen-Police Liaison Committees of Karachi, Jameel Yousaf, has said he hopes that American journalist Daniel Pearl is still alive.

In an interview with the BBC on Sunday, Jameel Yousaf said persons who masterminded the abduction of the Wall Street Journal reporter and sent e-mails have been arrested, hoping that the police will now reach and arrest the people who are holding the journalist.

The police and law enforcing agencies have identified three persons and conducted raids at some places in Punjab and interior Sindh but unfortunately, these persons could not be arrested, he said, adding the identification itself is a breakthrough.

Asked whether the probe is heading towards right direction as about 34 persons have so far been taken into custody, he replied in affirmative, saying these arrests helping identify the abductors.

To a question, he dispelled the impression that the government has failed to reach the abductors, adding when such a high profile incident takes place anywhere in the world, the kidnappers cannot even be identified for one or two years, but it is for the first time that the Pakistani law-enforcing agencies have identified the gang in about two weeks.
