Pakistan Press Foundation

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) Chairman Abdur Rashid has told the National Assembly Special Committee on Information and Broadcasting that over two million Indian Direct to Home (DTH) satellite broadcasting systems are working in Pakistan.

He said these DTH systems earn money from Pakistan to send it abroad and the government should act against this illegal practice. Owners of private TV channels, representatives of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) chairman attended the meeting of the committee with its convener in the chair.

PBA Chairman Shakeel Masood said the PBA drew a code of conduct for media in 2010 and it should be implemented after mutual consent. Committee convener Arfa Khalid said this code should be made effective in collaboration with the Information Ministry as the government does not intend to put curbs on the media. She said the media should take care of national interest. The meeting was held despite lack of quorum.
