PBA condemns illegal detention of journalist

The Pakistan Broadcasters Association (PBA) strongly condemns the illegal detention of a local TV news correspondent Babar Hussain in Rawalpindi.

According to Hussain, as conveyed to PBA, he was picked up by unknown people on the night of Saturday September 15, from his house in Faizabad, Rawalpindi. He was blindfolded and taken to an unknown location and interrogated for two days, after which he was released in Mianwali on Monday, September 17.

Babar Hussain was one of the Dawn News reporters who were investigating the bomb blast in Ghazi Terbela. This incident is an attempt to impinge on the freedom of speech and expression and a blatant curb on the freedom of media.

PBA demands the government, especially Minister of Information & Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Durrani, to investigate and take immediate action against this illegal detention.

PBA reiterates its stance that the journalists must be allowed to perform their professional duties freely, as they are competent to take cognizance while covering sensitive institutions as allowed by the law of the land. PBA expects a timely action against this uncalled-for high handedness.
