Parliamentary oversight to ensure good governance
ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production chairman, Lt-Gen (retired) Javed Ashraf Qazi, on Saturday said that parliamentary oversight of the executive ensured transparency and promoted good governance besides enabling the government to devise popular policies to achieve the goal of development and social emancipation of common man.
He expressed these views while addressing a group of 45 Foreign Services attaches and advisers based in Islamabad who visited the Parliament House.
General Qazi said that the role of Parliament was of utmost importance in achieving consensus on issues of immense public significance.
He briefed the group about the working and performance of the Senate and the role played by it in policy formulation.
He also informed the guests about the composition and electoral process of the Upper House. He said that provinces had been given equal representation in the Senate which helped evolve harmony and balanced growth of the country.
He said committee system in the Senate was very vibrant and kept a constant check on the working of the ministries and the departments.
He also apprised the delegation of the working of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production and said that it played active role in scrutinizing the defence spending and taking up other important matters related to defence of the country.
Answering various questions, Gen. Qazi said that floods of last summer have exacerbated the economic challenges of the country which directly affected all segments of the economy including defence.
He said that the Senate was playing efficient role in redressing the grievances of smaller provinces besides providing equal opportunities to all the federating units including Fata in raising their voice in the Parliament.
