Pakistan Television (PTV) news channel to be launched shortly

ISLAMABAD- Pakistan Television is giving touches to its preparations for the launch of a news and current affair channel to be known as Pakistan Network.

“Preparations are being finalised and PTV’s new channel will be launched shortly,” a senior official said. The PNN is expected to begin with a few hours transmission, which will include up -to minute reports on the latest happenings around the world and in-depth discussions on current affairs by experts.

“The channel will beam its transmission to a wide viewership and help Pakistani expatriates to have comprehensive information about happenings backhome,” the official said. The channel will help project Pakistan’s policies on a number of regional and international issues in a proper perspective.

Officials said a regulatory authority cast organisations would be in place by the end of the year to initiate the process of allowing Private radio and TV channels in the country. Officials said RAMBO will be led by a mediaperson of wide experience and high integrity and will start receiving applications in the half of the next year.

“The authority is expected to receive applications early next year and will decide about granting licences to the applicants in a fair and transparent money,” officials said. Private radio and TV channels are expected to be operative after June 2001. Experts say the launch of private channels in the country will begin an era of competition as well as kick up business activities on the horizon of electronic media.

The Ministry of Information has sent draft rules that would regulate the private channels to the Ministry Of Law, which are expected to be put before the cabinet for approval by the end of the month. “The present government is the first to have recognised the right of the people to the airwaves of the country,” official said.
