Pakistan re-elected to UN Human Rights Council

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan was re-elected on Wednesday to the new UN Human Rights Council, reflecting – in the words of Ambassador Munir Akram – renewed international confidence in the country following its return to full democracy.

Elections to fill 15 of the 47 seats on the Geneva-based council took place in the 192-member General Assembly. Other elected from Asia were Japan, Bahrain and South Korea. Pakistan polled 114 votes when 97 votes were required.

ìThis success was the outcome of considerable hard work by the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Pakistani embassies abroad,î Ambassador Akram said in an interview with APP.

Pakistan won despite a vicious campaign carried out by some organisations claiming to be advocates of human rights against its re-election bid. Ambassador Akram said, ìPakistan looks forward to continuing its active contribution to the promotion and protection of human rights all over the world, especially the right to development and economic and social prosperity as well as political and civil rights.
