Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) in a letter to President of Afghanistan Muhammad Ashraf Ghani welcomed new Afghan Presidential decree that should facilitate media activity and the fight against impunity for crimes of violence against journalists in the country.

PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in his letter urged Afghan government to ensure that cases of police violence against journalists, attacks on media outlets by armed men should be stopped and the fight against impunity be pursued to the end so that Afghan people get justice.

He said many Afghan state entities have in recent years summoned and interrogated journalists in a completely arbitrary manner. The cases of police violence against journalists continue.

Issued by President Ashraf Ghani on 31 January 2016, decree clearly states that “neither public prosecutor nor any other state institution may prosecute media or journalists for a possible crime without consulting the Media Commission, orders police, security services to improve their behavior towards journalists, respect media law and reopen investigations into journalists murder that took place in recent years.”
