Participants of a consultative workshop have said Pakistani media has greatly emerged as key stake holder and its influence has proven highly effective during various socio political movements. It has played a vital role in the democratic emergence. In the current situation there was dire needed to train the media professionals and more sensitize them to work for the promotion of tolerance and religious harmony in the society. Media has been exposing human right violations, corruption, cronyism and ill practices at all levels and media’s such role had promoted transparency.

This was observed during a 3-Day consultative workshop with Media and CSOs representatives on “Current Political Scenario and the role of Media, organized by Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF) from 14-16 June, 2012 at a Local Hotel of Ziarat. The workshop was participated by 22 representatives of media and CSOs.

They said in Pakistan, the responsibility of media had increased much more due to continued crisis and dictatorships; therefore media can be used for the promoting democracy and to resolve the issues of common folks.

They said an independent, free and impartial media was essential in current political scenario of the country. Proactive role of media and CSOs can minimize the corruption. They said people must fight against corruption by generating media support and to ensure the freedom and independence of the media.

Participants said NGOs should also play their more active role in exposing the corrupt practices in the society. People have been getting relief followed by media stories in many incidents and thus it had minimized the incidents of human rights violations. Media was playing better role by giving coverage to the activities of religious minorities which would promote religious harmony in the country. Some media anchors and newspapers had played biased role against religious minorities that was condemnable act.

Participants emphasized that political parties should raise awareness among the masses about their political and social rights and work to strengthen the democratic institutions. NGOs and media should raise awareness among masses about the good governance and its benefits. Political parties should follow their manifestos after coming into power.

The speakers included Mr. Muhammad Azam, local leader of Jamat Ulmae Islam (JUI-F), Mir Wice Khan of Pakhtunkhwah Milli Awami Party, Mr. Muhammad Sadiq Lala, Mr. Fatih Muhammad Johar, Mr. Naqeeb Kakar, Mr. Muhammad Yaqoob Kakar, president Press Club Ziarat and Mr. Mir Alam Khan. Speakers demanded that the role of secret agencies in politics should be eliminated.

During workshop, the participants were engaged in interactive and practical exercises, where colorful cards, flip charts were used, where and when needed. The participants were asked to produce a skillful and balanced piece of news report.

In the end Certificates were awarded to the participants by Assistant Commissioner Ziarat Mr. Fawad Hussain Shah. He appreciated the role of PPF on organizing such workshop in Ziarat and said media was playing its role better in the whole.
