Pakistan Press Foundation condemns attack on journalists in Mexico

Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), an independent non-governmental institution committed to promoting and defending freedom of expression is concerned over attack on journalists by people linked to People’s Unity Party (PUP) in Oaxaca on 1 January, 2014.

Quoting the information from ARTICLE 19: Global Campaign for Free Expression, PPF Secretary General Owais Aslam Ali in a letter to the President of United Mexican States said, Quote “Antonio Mundaca, Eduardo Jiménez Sandoval and Víctor López, from Oaxaca, and José de Jesús Alcántara from Veracruz, were physically attacked by people in Oaxaca. The journalists were attending the inauguration of local mayor in the municipality of San Miguel Soyaltepec, Oaxaca, on the border with Veracruze, when they noticed that the police is trying to persuade the PUP supporters, who blocked the road, to leave the area. After briefly talking to former PUP candidate, Marco Antonio Gómez Torres present there, when journalists went close to the PUP supporters, they attacked them with stones, machetes and sticks. Eduardo and José de Jesús were the most severely injured, while Víctor and Antonio were also punched. They were also issued life threats by the PUP supporters”.

PPF strongly condemns attacks on journalists and terms it as an attack on freedom of expression. PPF demands of the government to take action against those responsible and ensure safety of journalists.
